Ranakpur Jain Temple Near Udaipur

The Ranakpur Jain temple is one of the five major Jain teerths, or pilgrimages. The other four are in the Indian state of Gujarat.

More than 90 kms from Udaipur, it took us about an hour’s drive from Kumbhalgharh Fort to reach Ranakpur. A quick lunch at the restaurant of Hotel Roopam, and we got back our energy and will to explore this beautiful temple.

Dedicated to Lord Adinatha, Ranakpur Jain temple was built in the 15th century. The complex houses a number of other temples – that of Chamukha (which is apparently the most important temple), Parsavnath, Amba, Surya etc.

Once inside, you will marvel at the intricate marble workmanship. And you will certainly love the quiet and peace. We sat in one corner reciting hymns from the Gita and singing a Tagore’s bhakti song. It simply felt so appropriate.

Some quick facts about the Ranakpur Jain temple to help you with a hassle-free tour:

  • The temple complex is huge and very well maintained. That is to say, you will not mind walking bare feet.
  • Sleeveless dresses and short skirts are a big no-no at this temple. In case you are not carrying a scarf, rent one from the temple’s office. They charge you INR 20 for a scarf which is to be returned upon completion of your temple tour.
  • Non-Indians are not allowed in the inner section of the Chamukha temple which is the seat of Lord Adinath.
  • You have to pay separately for cameras and video-cameras
  • The temple priests double up as guides offering to give you a brief on the temple’s history
  • The Ranakpur Jain Temple is open from 12 noon to 6.30 pm every day for visitors
  • The Temple complex has washroom facilities.
